A common practice for cleaning up jewelry after a wedding or other event involves wiping the entire jewelry collection with a cloth, and then applying a light pressure to the surface.
However, as we all know, that pressure can cause skin irritation, irritation of the eyes and eyeshadows can become very red, and the eyes are sometimes damaged by the rubbing, says Anne Wojciechowski, professor of cosmetic dermatology at the University of Oxford.
“We’ve got to have a lot of patience,” she says.
“The first thing to do is to stop touching your eyes.”
For a quick solution, try a glass or plastic bottle.
Just put it in the sink, close the drain, and wipe it down with a cotton pad, then place the bottle in the shade of your home and let it sit for at least 15 minutes.
You can also put a damp cloth or rag on the skin with a little bit of water, then wipe the skin gently with the cloth.
You may have to use the same technique again a few times to remove the excess water.
The skin should feel clean, but still feel oily and sensitive, says Wojchowski.
Once the skin is dry, apply the light pressure and wait a few minutes to let the excess air dry out, then rinse off the cloth and rinse again.
It’s best to use a non-irritating cotton pad on your face to help prevent skin irritation.
“It’s important to be aware of your own skin and avoid contact with it,” says Wajchowski says.
It may also be worth avoiding wearing eye shadow that has been washed and dried with the same solution, as the eye shadows can cause a red tint to the skin, says Barbara Stacey, a dermatologist in the UK who specializes in eye and skin problems.
She suggests washing eye shadow with water and wiping it down gently with a dry cloth.
“Washing your eyes with a solution with water will wash away the water, which may result in a red dye on the eye and potentially cause irritation to the eye,” she explains.
For the most sensitive eye, Stacey suggests using an eye makeup remover or moisturizer instead.
Avoid using alcohol for cleaning the eyes If you don’t want to use alcohol, you can use a diluted solution of alcohol, which will leave a more oily residue.
If you are not familiar with alcohol, a few ingredients may be a good start: citric acid (often found in a can of beer)
